Programs

2nd Grade “The Time Machine”

Learn more about timelines and what life was like for 2nd graders in the 1880s and the 1950s, then compare it to your life in 2nd grade today.  There are a lot of good things in the “Time Machine” box.

3rd Grade “My Community and the Railroad”

Learn more about how the railroad companies shaped northeastern South Dakota and how people in your community made it what it is today.

4th Grade “Researching Homesteading”

Homesteaders did some amazing and interesting things in the 1880s.  Learn more about specific individuals from Codington County, how to research and how to read old maps.

During the summer months the museum offers a free program on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for elementary-aged children.​Click here for a weekly list of topics.


Speaker Visits

If you can’t come to us we can come to you.  Museum staff and volunteers have prepared several presentations about local history with photo slideshows for all kinds of groups.   Call for a list of available presentations and available times.

History Club

Each month the history club gathers to discuss a different historic topic.  Sometimes members present and sometimes staff, but it is always interesting.  No advance notice needed.  Just come to the museum on the Third Thursday at Three Thirty.

Our Mission

The mission of the Codington County Historical Society and Heritage Museum is to collect, preserve and disseminate the history of the county in order to educate the community and stimulate an appreciation for our local history.

June, July & August
Monday – Friday
10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
​Saturdays
1:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Visitors are encouraged to wear a mask.  Occupancy will be limited to protect visitors, staff and volunteers.
